Chris Ballentine holds the Oxford University Chair of Geochemistry. He has 30 years of experience developing the science behind using helium and noble gas isotopes to trace multiphase fluid origin, migration and trapping in geological systems. His application of this science has led to major changes in our understanding of oil and gas systems, carbon dioxide waste storage, groundwater security, hydrogen origin and commercial helium accumulation (e.g. Tanzania and the US Texas Panhandle). He has led large research programs funded by multinationals such as Exxon-Mobil, BP and Total, as well as the UK and US governments, and is currently Head (Chair) of the Oxford University Department of Earth Sciences.
